Celtic Gaming: Golden Joystick Awards 2009

Yeah, I know all three of us have been kinda behind in updates, but everyone knows that this part of the year is busy for a lot of people. Az has stuff she’s got on, Rappy has a really big project going on, and I’m up to some stuff as well, but what better way to get back to updating than taking a moment to tell you folks about the Golden Joystick Awards (( )). I was putting in my votes and I thought I’d share them with you, and tell you why. There are a couple of games that got my vote in multiple categories, so it will be game first, then the categories. I’ll be leaving out the two UK Specific categories. Read the rest of this entry »

Magic Changes are Tolerable, but WotC is Clueless

“Oh, yes! Magic! I used to play that. But then Sixth Edition came out and it screwed up everything.”

As someone who’s been a part of the original trading card game for six years, who joined right after the release of Mirrodin, I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve heard this phrase from older players. They’d usually pat me on the head, tell me how cute I am, give me a lollipop, and then walk away humming a familiar song from the Billboard charts… And then they’d interrupt said humming as they shouted back to me and my friends, “Enjoy the money trap! Stop by and say hi sometime after you’ve sworn off cardboard crack for good!”

And as someone who shrugs off the opinions of those older players and doesn’t know what they’re talking about, I’d usually just shake my head and enjoy the free sucker. Mmm, grape. ^_^

But just like all those who unleashed the greatest nerd rage the multiverse has ever known when D&D 4th Edition was released, I failed to foresee that Wizards of the Coast would one day scorn me, and I would soon know the pain of those older MTG players who curse the name of the Stack and all things associated with it. Celtic Rants: Twilight

What is it with the Internet lately? It loves making me write extra stuff. Twilight. Pish. Greargh…

*Note, this is not a review, more a making fun of over-zealous fans. Read the rest of this entry »

Celtic Gaming: Valve – Left 4 Dead 2 Preview and Portal Review

Right, I know I said I’d be back Tuesday, but I’ve been looking at the trailer for Left 4 Dead 2, and saw that several people are saying to boycott the new game from Valve. This has let me come back two days early to say why I think that boycotting the game isn’t exactly a good option. Sit down and read on, you disagree, feel free to let me know. Celtic Gaming Resumes Next Week

Hey folks, Scotsperson here – First I’d like to extend my welcome to Azalea, who will be a great addition the the RRB crew. The Past couple of weeks, I’ve missed out a couple of Thursday updates, and that’s due to the fact I’ve been going through some bad stuff in my life lately. I won’t get into it, that’s not what this is for – but I need to take this week off to help get my head clear. You have my word Celtic Gaming will return next Tuesday, back to it’s twice a week schedule

My sincere apologies,

Rogues Are Powerful

Cue an image of me standing in a room of pure white, not unlike the beginning of those World of Warcraft commercials. You know the ones. They’ve starred such famous celebrities as actor Verne Troyer, voice talent Vic Mignona, and most recently, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. Only I’m not standing in a cool pose with an arrogant smirk on my face. Instead, I’m in a stiff pose with my eyes wide open like a deer in headlights, nervously wringing my hands as I speak into the boom mic: Read the rest of this entry »

Rappy’s RPG Reviews: BESM d20

Hello again readers! For today’s review, I’ll be stepping a bit out of my comfort zone with a rendition of d20 rules that are departed from the d20 Star Wars series, Dungeons and Dragons and d20 Modern: Big Eyes Small Mouth d20 by the now-defunct Guardians of the Order. For those of you that don’t know, Big Eyes Small Mouth (often referred to simply as BESM) was originally a tristat system that still lives on in White Wolf’s buyout of the property. The d20 edition, however, was GoO’s attempt to be “hip” and “in” with the d20 scene despite their apparent snobbish nose-turning at the “inferior” system. How did they fare? Well, let’s look inside. Note that this isn’t a review of the tristat system BESM…I don’t own it, and unless you’re willing to shell out money for me to buy them, I’m not reviewing non-d20 products right now.
